Marian Street Theatre for Young People is under threat. It is in danger of not returning to its home of 45 years. I have worked at Marian St since 2007, and designed the lighting for 25 shows.
Kuringai Council have deemed the theatre to be unsafe, and engaged a consultant to provide a report on the future of the theatre. Council want to make the theatre a commercial venture, charging appropriate commercial rates. MSTYP does not have a problem with this, but the feeling is that MSTYP will also be charged these rates, which, as a non profit organisation, it clearly can't afford. This simply means this wonderful company will cease to exist.
I have had the pleasure over the last eight years to work with generations of MSTYP students. Many of them I work with today as experienced theatre professionals. Without the confidence and support MSTYP has provided, making a career in the profession they love, would have been much more difficult. I urge everyone who cares about not only children's theatre, but the future of theatre in general, to support MSTYP.
